I came across a story in Business Standard today. Now don’t you simply hate it every time you hear of such a headline? The reason? Well, when I first saw the headline, I was bewildered for I had not heard of this institution’s name earlier. Like ever. So I was curious to know what parameter have they ranked the college upon. My guess came true when I found out it was based on the number of students.
School of Communication and Management Studies (SCMS), Kochi has become the largest business school in the country in the autonomous sector with the sanctioning of 60 seats in its P G Programme in Management, a SCMS release claimed today. With the 120 seats in the MBA programme of SCMS School of Technology and Management, SCMS Group has 450 seats in its management programme.
Going to their site I found out that they are:
The best college in Kerala
6th Best in South India
And amongst top 20 in India. Along with some other dubious distinctions.
All I am saying is that it seems a little shady to me. It’s just a little pissing off when there are little strings attached here and there. It happens every time I see VIT sporting banners of “Best Private Engineering College in India”. What the fuck is this then?
All that being said, I think I was a bit harsh at this B school. The reason being it caters to a particular niche audience. Its after all a communication school and hence should be compared to other colleges in its category such as MICA.
Though I have a feeling that the biggest Business School in India will somehow emerge from the god forsaken lands of Orissa. They seem to be investing a hell lot in education. I can just see a huge 200 acre campus with sprawling lawns just emerge out of no where. And never ending grants. Ah!

well there are a few things that i would like to say over here. first things first. the college cannot be compared to the lies of MICA mainly cos, communication courses are not their main forray. they are mainly into raking in the moolah through their programmkes like PGDM and MBA. although they started off with PR and Advertising, now that course is being run just for the sake of it. its high time that they either re invent the course by adding something valueble to it or just scrap the whole thing all together. the course is just not wirth doing.although it has been this course that has been bringing acollades to the college time and again.
so that leaves us with their MBA and PGDM.
the ratings of the college frankly should not be judged by the how much they take, but rather by how much they give. what that means is…instead of boasting of having 450 and 1000 students why not think of where these students have reached. why do you think the IIMs are the most aspired colleges. they dont take so many students. then what could be the reason. well obviously because the students have that kind of value attchyed to them. the students have proved their worth over a period of time.
the college does boast of 100% placement. but then lets just check what these placed students are doing and earning. i haven’t got a good feedback regarding the starting draw for the students. hell 15-20K and they think they have done a good job.??? not at all…..a call centre executive gets more than that….and a graduate joining as a corporate communication executive in an MNC gets more than that. then why blow 7 laks for such a course.
the fact is such reports are published to please the vanity of the management and to get some more students bump into the college.
how about checking the article itself that was published in Business standard. a report published in any magazine would never say “a realease said” or “it said” kind of thing. that clearly shows the magazine doesnot want to do anything with the report and they have done it just for the heck of it…..
